bennagel@authentikmusic “we started ‘pay what you want’ for our music rather then a set fee, and have already made way more than selling. why?” – There is a different mentality than in the past in relation to the value of music and how people like to attain new content. Many believe that music should be free and there are also those that have the means to purchase music they feel is worth their money. When presented with a “pay what you want” option like Radiohead recently tried it gave almost every fan on the planet the chance to hear their new album. This marketing technique will not always work the same for every artist, it really depends on the size of the band and the demand for their music. For an emerging artist it’s important have access to your music even if you have to give away a free song or two. The idea being that if the user likes what they hear, they are more likely to make an investment in more digital music, tickets to your live shows and merchandise. – Bob / Submitted by @bennagel
LaughyTaffy@authentikmusic “.. why have i never heard any of the songs in the BB Top 10 right now? ” – I assume you mean the Billboard Top 10? Artists appearing on the BB Top 10 are acts that have risen to a high level of profile at radio and retail, representing the most active artists in both those arenas for the period of time in question. These Artists have typically been building their profile over the course of several years through hard work, timing and a bit of luck, and almost ALL of them have taken a multi-pronged approach to getting to where they are. One of the reasons you may not recognize anything listed is that you are a fan of more ‘indie’ music and perhaps mainstream pop/rock/r&b/hip-hop isn’t quite your thing. These genres tend to spawn sometimes quicker hits, yet without building a loyal fanbase in the process. This of course makes the Artist only as good as their next single which is a tricky proposition at best. It always comes down to great songs, but remember that your work ethic can truly dictate whether or not your fans stay with you! – Bob / Submitted by @LaughyTaffy
